!: Promotional African Odyssey Review
When the author and his wife arrive at the Tanzanian border with Kenya, expecting to spend a weekend gazing at Mt. Kilimanjaro, they are informed that they will not be allowed to return to their Nairobi apartment until they've left East Africa, a loose conglomeration of five nations.
Thus begins a month-long impromptu Odyssey that takes them as far as the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, the fabled Spice Islands of Zanzibar, and on safari in the Serengetti before finally returning home.
Along the way they meet dozens of people, both local and international travelers, missionaries, nuns, river-boat captains, safari adventurers, and learn far more than they wanted to about a continent steeped in poverty and dominated by political corruption.
The beauties of Africa and her people, however, ultimately take center stage. From the colorful costumes of the women, to the wild creatures of the bush, to the magnificent landscapes of the Great Rift Valley, and the world's largest single wall of water, the reader is transported to an alien world filled with very familiar human beings.
